Is Cataclysm the Next World of Warcraft Expansion? 259

ajs writes "There has been no official announcement yet, but a number of moves by Blizzard Entertainment seem to indicate that the next expansion for World of Warcraft could be titled Cataclysm. Speculation began when Blizzard trademarked Cataclysm recently, and then later when a test server briefly popped up with the word 'Maelstrom' in its name. If true, the name would fall neatly into the WoW lore and expected expansion list. The Cataclysm is another name for the Great Sundering, an event that created a swirling vortex of water and mystical energies (the 'Maelstrom') that has appeared on the world map in-game since release. There are also indications that early design work included some of the islands in this area, which has long fueled anticipation of a Maelstrom-based expansion involving the former Night Elf noble, Azshara, queen of the Naga and the Goblins whose main city is in the south seas."

Feed Science Daily: Alpha Centauri Should Harbor Detectable, Earth-like Planets (sciencedaily.com)

A rocky planet similar to Earth may be orbiting one of our nearest stellar neighbors and could be detected using existing techniques, according to astronomers. The closest stars to our Sun are in the three-star system called Alpha Centauri, a popular destination for interstellar travel in works of science fiction. Computer simulations of planet formation show that terrestrial planets are likely to have formed around the star Alpha Centauri B and to be orbiting in the "habitable zone" where liquid water can exist on the planet's surface. Such planets could be observed using a dedicated telescope.

Comment I don't want re-releases I want new games! (Score 1) 328

Squaresoft used to be a great company. I have been slowly working through FFX on my friends PS2. While being able to switch to Grand Theft Auto at whim is nice, I am too much of a sucker for Earthbound and F-Zero to actually buy a PS2 over a gamecube.

Squaresoft's change of heart is nice, except for the fact that a lot of the games have gotten annoying. I think FFXIII is the clearest example of that. But more than anything, I am sick and tired of remakes of all the old SNES games. Sure Secret of Mana would be nice on the GBA, but how hard is it to make a new game? I wouldn't care if Squaresoft used the same graphics, mechanics, and characters, just give me a new story. Let me those play FF4-6, Chrono Trigger, and SoM type games again, but don't make buy something I already have.

Of course we are all suckers and will go buy all the square re-releases because they are there. Stupid stupid us.
