Also, If you want a persistent command line access over SSH, try the screen command. Screen allows you to have a detached VTY interface. Once you start your SSH session, just run the screen command and you are in the virtual terminal. Run whatever commands you want to run and leave running (in my case Minecraft servers). Do a Ctrl-a + d to detach from the session. And finallay do a "screen -r" command to reattach. You can run multiple screen sessions that you can name and reattach to them by name later on.

I use X2go to remotely access a GUI on my Linux boxes. Give it a shot. They have clients for Mac Windows and Linux. It runs over SSH, so if you can get a putty connection, you can get X2go to work.

Linux Mint user here. I use MS Teams for work on my Linux machines and I have found that installing Microsoft Edge and running Teams via a PWA works the best for me. The same goes for the other O365 apps.

Or, just go with Flatpak and don't care what distro you go with...

Bonus points for installing Flatpaks in your /home/user directory and multiboot between distros and have access to all your apps in each one. ;-)

I run Linux at home and Windows at work. I have gone into the command line of each at about the same rate... and mostly for the same reason. (Ping, traceroute, and DNS queries.) I mean, the GUI tools have gotten really good over the last 5 years.

If you haven't tried Linux in a while, go grab Virtualbox and a copy of Linux Mint and try it out for yourself. A lot has changed. You may be presently surprised.

I have the feeling that Linux powered, but not Linux branded, systems will be heavily used. Android and Chromebooks for example.

Either way, all that will be needed is either a installable client or a web browser soft client. Take VMware Horizon for example. It can be used as an installed client or a web browser. There are clients for Windows, Mac, iOS, Linux, Chrome and Android and it works for practically everything. Even virtual engineering systems.

+1 for Mint. It has a great diver manager to get the Nvidia proprietary drivers and you can include the media codecs during install. Plus, it has Flatpak already in the software manager making install a breeze.

If they really wanted to crack down on this (and secure the accounts from being stolen), all they would need to do is enable two factor authentication. Just have it set up that you need to re-authenticate every month or have to re-authenticate if your IP address changes.

There are many options out there. SMS, Email, Google Authenticator, Okta, or many others. They can be simple to complex. But, I would personally choose the SMS or email methods. SMS for ease and email due to needing an email address for account creation in the first place.
