Comment Card games, IRC, and emulation (Score 0) 170

I first got into programming through a real-life card game—which I realized I could play much more cheaply, frequently, and competitively online through IRC. Once on IRC I discovered client-side scripting and started writing my own. Hanging out on IRC led me to other channels, including file-sharing channels where people traded these things called ROMs—memory dumps of old arcade and console games—and played them on emulators. Then I became interested in how all that worked and that's about the time I bought my first book on C. So yes, video games were a catalyst for me to learn more about the inner workings of computers.

CEO of Spyware Maker Arrested For Enabling Stalkers 195

An anonymous reader writes: U.S. authorities have arrested and indicted the CEO of a mobile software company for selling spyware that enables "stalkers and domestic abusers." The U.S. Department of Justice accuses the man of promoting and selling software that can "monitor calls, texts, videos and other communications on mobile phones without detection." The agency pointed out this is the first criminal case based on mobile spyware, and promised to aggressively pursue makers of similar software in the future. Here's the legal filing (PDF). The FBI, with approval from a District Court, has disabled the website hosting the software.

"The indictment alleges that StealthGenie's capabilities included the following: it recorded all incoming/outgoing voice calls; it intercepted calls on the phone to be monitored while they take place; it allowed the purchaser to call the phone and activate it at any time to monitor all surrounding conversations within a 15-foot radius; and it allowed the purchaser to monitor the user's incoming and outgoing e-mail messages and SMS messages, incoming voicemail messages, address book, calendar, photographs, and videos. All of these functions were enabled without the knowledge of the user of the phone."

Invest in a durable, compact laptop preloaded with Linux and only the necessary software to view the data. This should be fairly cheap because you won't need a WiFi card or ethernet port, nor a high-end graphics card. The bulk of the cost should be spent on a reliable hard drive. Once you have everything documented, encrypt the drive and stick it in a safe-deposit box next to your will. This way the data never has to be transported anywhere.

Submission + - Drupal.org user accounts compromised (drupal.org)

An anonymous reader writes: The Drupal.org team released a bulletin this evening notifying users of a breach in their infrastructure. From the bulletin:

The Drupal.org Security Team and Infrastructure Team has discovered unauthorized access to account information on Drupal.org and groups.drupal.org. This access was accomplished via third-party software installed on the Drupal.org server infrastructure, and was not the result of a vulnerability within Drupal itself. This notice applies specifically to user account data stored on Drupal.org and groups.drupal.org, and not to sites running Drupal generally. Information exposed includes usernames, email addresses, and country information, as well as hashed passwords... All Drupal.org passwords are both hashed and salted, although some older passwords on some subsites were not salted

Users are encouraged to update their Drupal.org passwords and the passwords of any accounts that could be linked via the compromised information.
