Journal cyranoVR's Journal: Using SuSE after all 16

I decided to try out the Suse Live-Eval CD on our Win98 500mghz Pentium II Aptiva, just to see if it would work. Well, it turns out it worked great! Set up was unbelievably easy (and faster than installing Windows 98, IIRC). No need for partitioning or anything. Of course, this isn't a "real" linux installation because I won't be able to save any files (I don't think) but its a start. Update: I can save files, but only 90MB worth, and apparently only to the /home directory?

And so here I sit, posting to Slashdot using Mozilla under Suse 8.2!

Hmm...KDE is kinda slow on this machine...

Using SuSE after all

  • and have had pretty good experiences with it. but then, i like the choice it gives you of nice gui tools or command line tools. i like linux, but i just like to use it. i don't feel a need to understand all the workings of everything. maybe that means i'm not a true geek. i am like that about some things, but not everything.

I think you can actually. If you create a partition, you can then mount it while you have SuSE up and running. Then you can save files.

I love Mozilla. Tabbed browsing, e-mail, calendar, typing links. I keep learning new Mozilla attributes everyday.

    I use Window Mak [windowmaker.org]

    • I use Window Maker [windowmaker.org]. It's pretty light-weight, and I like the way it looks. There are other choices that should be pretty easy to change in a distro like SuSE.

I really should read the comments before replying to journals. It's also my window manager of choice.

    • It turns out the SuSE live eval CD creates a giant file called "suselinux.usr" where it stores all the files I write to my /home directory (and anything else I save?). Since the distro runs off a CD-ROM, I'm guessing everything on the "CD" partition is read-only (as in: I can't "save" something to the directory where its actually written to the .usr file - I don't think anyway).

The only thing keeping me from a full install on my Aptiva at this point is the fact that space is at a premium...but after Natio

Yeah, so imagine running KDE2 on a P120 with 32Meg RAM. Frigging insane. And *yes* I did that, but not for very long. That's why I use WindowMaker [windowmaker.org]. It's just my windowmanager of choice, and I really like the philosophy. :-)

    • It looks pretty cool.

  • Installation and administration on SuSE all goes through Yast2, and that's why I run SuSE.

Yast2 makes installation cake (I did my first full network install with SuSE, and it worked flawlessly). KDE3 is a great way to go (and do a network install for the latest and greatest stuff AND its easy to update, because you already have Yast2 setup to point to a SuSE mirror).

Air pollution is really making us pay through the nose.

Working...
