Comment Sad but its all about design choices (Score 1) 323

This is strange to say because I have had a preference for Macs since the 80’s. The fact is there is more to a computer than just raw performance and the Dell XPS simply is a better designed laptop. The mac looks dated with its industry leading design from eight years ago. Then the new m2 airs look just ridiculous with their notch, forcing you to dark mode and make unacceptable compromises like running your screen in low resolution mode. Apple design has grown arrogant and have made some really poor design choices and are too high on them selves to fix these obvious problems. The XPS simply looks better, has more features such as touchscreen.

On the OS side it is more murky, MacOS is still better designed in my opinion but apple is locking us down to it instead of letting us run windows, linux and BSD. For programmers like me this is a very unfortunate choice by apple. I am forced to buy a Wintel Laptop and a Chomebook instead of having one machine like I do with my intel mac. There are times I need those other OS’s on my laptop and Apple’s arrogance again is keeping me from running them with full performance. Why take features away that are needed by your users? Just sad.

Finally the nail in the coffin. Apple has deemed that they will make it impossible to upgrade your machine in any way. No after market ram, no after market SSD’s and no after market battery. I am not sure if this is more arrogance or just plain greed. I am certain apple could design these laptops to be upgradable hell the original air with nearly the same design was.

There, an unbiased review from the Mac faithful. Until apple gets their act together on design and features the best laptop you can buy is a dell XPS. I personally could not possibly get a windows laptop so I will remain waiting until they realize their error and at least get rid of the dastardly horrible design choice that is the notch.

I would welcome a search engine from Apple, specially an add free search. 50% of my search results are add that have nothing to do with what I searched. That said, having worked on two search engines in the 90s, it’s not so easy. There is a reason why all those 90s search engines are gone, and it’s not because google bullied them out of existence. Apple also made duck duck go the default search engine for a bit and guess what was the first thing people did they switched it to google.

They do develop the technologies they acquire but usually the user has no idea where those technologies came from.

Comment Mobile m1 on a desktop a foolish choice (Score 1) 182

There are quite a few very puzzling choices in this launch.\n First and foremost is why put an m1 with 4 performance and 4 energy conserving cores on a desktop. It’s just boneheaded. Nobody wants to save a few watts on a computer that is plugged in to the wall. They should have made a processor with 8 performance cores. Just a waste. Second, 8 gigs of ram for both video and cpu is incredibly low. I understand on a low end portable MacBook, but desktops are not meant for such low performance. Third, why put a bottom bezel on this device, there is no point in having the iMac thin all the way down and then have a huge lower bezel. It’s just bad design. Lastly, if you are going to make it look like an iPad, make the screen a touch screen, and let it detach from the base. As a Mac user for 30 years, this is one of the most technically disappointing Mac launches. Apple needed to go big here, they went meek and thoughtless.

I think this is driven by their completion and the lack of cooperation in the electronics industry these days. Google does the same, and then they make their products work poorly on apple hardware, so apple has to make their own. Same with amazon, amazon is a content producer, and they exclude Apple TV so apple has to make their own. Microsoft and Nintendo makes games but they don't work on apple hardware so ... apple has to make games to stay competitive in their main business. I think the world would be a better place if technology companies would agree to segregate and work on what they do best, but unfortunately those kinds of alliances were tried in the past and guess what? Microsoft copied the apple portion and sold it themselves (Windows). IBM and Motorola could not compete with intel when apple struggled and where is their chip business now? Non existent. All these companies are struggling to maintain these ecosystems so they can sell their products because their hardware makers in Asia are creating their own ecosystems and are trying to lock them out or are outright stealing their ideas before they get to market with them (Samsung, etc). This is why apple is trying to protect itself by making batteries, CPUs and eventually iPhones and Macs.

Burger King (god save us), Starbucks and toys r us. Burger King was in the second basement at the very back all the other restaurants where on floors 9 and 10... clearly they did not chose that spot. Starbucks had a fairly good spot, hidden on the third floor, but better than Burger King. Toys R Us had a nice spot with the other toy stores... great right?
