Comment cosmic strings != a subset of string theory (Score 1) 553

This indeed does place a bound on the possible existence of cosmic strings, however the description of this article seems to imply that cosmic strings have something to do with string theory. The two concepts are completely unrelated. In cosmology, cosmic strings are 1D topological defects caused by a phase change in a region of spacetime. They do not require string theory and string theory does not require them. They just happen to be two concepts in theoretical physics that used the word "string" to describe 1-dimensional entities.

Comment Did a collaborative book with Google Docs + LaTeX (Score 1) 328

I wrote a collaborative novel last year which was laid out in LaTeX. Each chapter was written by its 1-3 writers on a document I created in Google Docs. At the end, I wrote a Python script that downloaded all 23 chapters, translated them into LaTeX docs in the style that I wanted for the book layout (most of the markup I had to worry about was stuff like quotes, new paragraphs, italics, special characters, etc (it was not full of equations)), and it then called PDFLaTeX on the master document which combined them into a book. This allowed people to modify their documents online, and for me to handle the layout in parallel with the up-to-date text.

So, this allowed like 12 people to have no learning curve, but it depended on me knowing Python and LaTeX. Not sure if I answered the question. Sorry. Just use version numbers or something.

Comment Solid undergraduate-level physics texts (Score 1) 276

Landau and Lifshitz Classical Mechanics - concise and beautifully written. Might be stylistically appealing for someone with a background in mathematics.

Griffiths Introduction to Electromagnetism - A classic and clear introductory text. Probably his best book.

Griffiths Introduction to Quantum Mechanics - Another classic. It's also a short book. If you are looking for more Dirac notation, check out Shankar, another classic at the undergraduate level.

Reif Fundamentals of Statistical and Thermal Physics - Great and very complete introduction to statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. If you find the text daunting, you could substitute it for Schroeder.

Taylor and Wheeler Spacetime Physics - Great introduction to special relativity. You'll find a more mathematical treatment in Griffiths EM or any GR book.

-----

If you are interested in reading a bit of undergraduate-level general relativity and astrophysics as well, good books are

Hartle Gravity - An UG-level intro to General Relativity. Focuses on the physics and providing you with metrics. Fun book. Try Carroll if you want something more mathematical.

Ryden Introduction to Cosmology - Great, recent introduction to cosmology at the UG level. Will give you a lot of intuition into your later studies of cosmology.

You might want to check out a good UG-level text on stellar astrophysics as well, but there's probably more than enough on your plate, unless you're some sort of robot.

What Are Must-Sees For Open Day At the LHC? 210

ribasushi writes "The last open day at the Large Hadron Collider is one week away. While I have a solid chance to go, I am dumbstruck by the insane amount of things to see during the 10 hours of the event. Since I do not know all that much about physics, I am turning to the knowledgeable crowd here at Slashdot — what do you think are the most awesome 5 must-see things on the agenda next Sunday?"

Homemade Robot Patrols Atlanta Streets 324

Josh Fink brings news of an Atlanta resident who has created a remote control robot to scare off criminals during the night. Rufus Terrill, an engineer, uses it to patrol the streets and encourage drug dealers and other shady characters to move on. Local residents call it his "Robocop." From CNN: "It's a barbecue smoker mounted on a three-wheeled scooter, and armed with an infrared camera, spotlight, loudspeaker and aluminum water cannon that shoots a stream of icy water about 20 feet. Operated by remote control, the robot spotlights trespassers on property down the street from his bar, O'Terrill's. Using a walkie-talkie, Terrill belts out through the robot's loudspeaker, 'That's private property. You guys need to get out of here.'"

Dutch Unveil Robot Gas Station Attendant 287

Lucas123 writes "According to a Reuters' story, Dutch inventors today took the wraps off a $110,000 car-fueling robot they say is the first of its kind. (It was inspired by a cow milking robot.) After registering the car as it pulls up to the pump, the machine matches your fuel cap design with those in a database and your car's fuel type, and then a robotic arm fitted with multiple sensors extends from a regular gas pump, 'opens the car's flap, unscrews the cap, picks up the fuel nozzle and directs it towards the tank opening, much as a human arm would, and as efficiently.' Wait till Hollywood gets hold of this scenario."

Blizzard and Activision Announce $18.8bn Merger 298

Ebon Praetor writes "The BBC reports that Blizzard and Activision have announced an $18.8bn merger. Activision's CEO, Bobby Kotick, will become the head of the joint company, while Vivendi, Blizzard's current parent company, will become the largest single investor in the new group. Even with the size of the merger, the combined company will still be smaller than the industry giant EA. 'As part of the merger plan, Blizzard will invest $2bn in the new company, while Activision is putting up $1bn. The merged business will be called Activision Blizzard ... Vivendi will be the biggest shareholder in the group.'"

Football Field-Sized Kite Powers Latest Freighter 251

coondoggie writes to tell us that a new freighter set to launch in December will be receiving a hefty dose of power from a kite the size of a football field. The 460-foot ship, owned by the Beluga shipping company, hopes to see as much as a 50% drop in fuel consumption during optimal conditions. "The SkySails system consists of a towing kite with rope, a launch and recovery system and a control system for the whole operation. The control system acts like the autopitot systems on an aircraft, the company says. Autopilot software sends and receives data about the sail etc to make sure the sail is set at its optimal position. The company also says it provides an optional weather routing system so that ships can sail into optimal wind conditions. The kites typically fly at about 1,000 feet above sea level, thereby tapping winds that can be almost 50% stronger than at the surface. What If Gmail Had Been Designed by Microsoft? 279

MIT Reinvents Transportation With Foldable, Stackable Car 158

alphadogg writes "Parking in a downtown area is one of the least enjoyable elements of driving. MIT researchers may have found a solution: a car you can fold up before parking. The boxy conveyance folds in half, and the plan is for the vehicle to fit eight in one conventional parking spot. 'Franco Vairani, a Ph.D. candidate at MIT and one of the original designers in the City Car project, said his team is taking a vending-machine approach to city travel. In his vision of the future, people would find a stack of electrical-powered City Cars on nearly every block in the city. When a user would want to drive somewhere in town, he would swipe a smart card or cell phone across an electronic reader and take a car out of the stack. When he gets to a business meeting across town, a shopping mall or their doctor's office, the driver simply leaves the car in a stack at his destination. The drivers don't own the cars. They simply rent them. It's fully self-service. The next person takes a car out of the stack, and off he goes.'"

Small Electric Car May Usher In Big Changes 575

An anonymous reader sends us to a profile in CNNMoney.com on a Norwegian car company that is building a compact, plug-in electric car, the Think City, that will go on sale in Europe early next year. It could hit US markets in 2009. The CEO is working with Silicon Valley VCs and with Google, Tesla Motors, PG&E, and Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway. Plans are to sell the car only on the Web. No dealers, cheap manufacturing plants, and a battery pack that you lease, not buy — there's potential here for shaking up the auto industry the way Dell did PCs.

Japanese Auto Makers Teaming Up To Create Standard OS 266

CNet is reporting that Japanese car manufacturers are teaming up to develop a standard automotive operating system. "Just as computer operating systems [...] allow multiple applications to communicate with one another, an automotive operating system enables different driving systems to work together. The standard automotive operating system from Japan will include everything from fuel injection, brakes and power steering to power windows. Currently, certain mechanical car parts are interchangeable from model to model. Smart car parts that operate off a common software standard would enable that kind of convenience to continue, while allowing them to communicate more easily with other smart components in a car."
