Submission + - Fingerprints required to rent a car in UK

cybaea writes: In a sign that biometrics are becoming a mandatory part of everyday life, the BBC is reporting that in order to rent a car at London's Stansted airport, you now have to give a fingerprint. The fingerprints are stored by the hire firms — and will be handed over to the police if the car is stolen or used for another crime. Europecar, one of the participating firms, says that it will be rolled out to other locations if the pilot scheme is "successful". It is not clear if there is any civil or criminal liability if your biometrics are leaked or stolen.
