Comment It's management and leadership (Score 1) 249

Lots of discussion about "shielding", "protecting" etc. Good stuff, but don't forget that being in a management position also means being a leader, and leaders need to challenge their teams to reach higher (quality, productivity, etc). and accomplish more. New managers out there shouldn't lose sight of this. It's very important. Source: IT VP.

Irrelevant! I am differentiating between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. You're a typical anti-corporate insect. You object to applying the same argument against individuals. The principle is the same. How does the argument change if the Prius costs is less than the credit? Are the "previously bike-riding individuals" scumbags then?

It's not perverted; nor is it malfeasant. If you had a more fuel efficient form of transportation, say a bike or motorcycle, or your feet, and bought a new car eligible for a tax credit, and accepted the tax credit, you'd be doing the same thing. I'd be less interested in this and more interested in illuminating the *intended* tax breaks that we perceive as unethical. Congress needs some sunlight (and a good disinfectant).

Comment This is win/win for Amazon (prediction) (Score 2, Interesting) 370

I believe what will ultimately happen is that they'll have two tiers of Kindle books - one with audio disabled, at the current price; and one with audio enabled, which will cost more. Amazon wins because they generate more profit; and the Author's Guild wins because they can claim they're working for their constituency. In the end, it's only you and me that gets the shaft.

Comment Publisher's role now and in the future (Score 1) 370

The following is more a question to prompt discussion than an answer: without paper, what is the publisher publishing? Do they still get the same % cut? Are they attempting to reduce Kindle's attractiveness because they know in the end, without paper, authors like Stephen King and other popular (and not so popular authors) can self-publish, removing the publishers from the picture entirely? It seems to me that once you eliminate the paper, the publisher's value-add (and power) is significantly reduced.
