My "nerdy" son referred me to this discussion, let me add several already existing paths to pursue: 1) GPSs have been linked to voice output so that people with vision impairments can achieve mobility with accuracy. 2) The IBOT 3000 a sort of "wheelchair" that incorporates three sampling CPUs and gyroscopes and enables the users to cross rough terrain; climb stairs, and "stand up" on to wheels to increase vertical access. Undergoing FDA testing. Designed by Dean Kamen. Search: DEKA; IBOT; and Johnson & Johnson. 3) French IBM lab has developed a chip and implanted in a person with spinal cord injury enabling him to do rudimentary lifting of leg thus far.
