The year was 2000. I was installing IDEfix IDE-adapter on my beefed up Amiga 1200, but somehow it got misaligned, and when I turned on the power, the holy smoke (the one that keeps all electronics working) got out. That was the end of an era, and I was forced to move on to Macs.
