Submission + - The dangers of single-source app stores

cstec writes: As Apple and Microsoft drive to create OSes with vendor-store-only install policies, the dangers of owning one of those devices became readily apparent as Microsoft today abandoned the Windows Mobile Marketplace, even as new Windows Mobile devices are being sold. From today's MS email:

The Windows Marketplace for Mobile web site at http://marketplace.windowsphone.com/ will no longer be available starting on July 15, 2011. After July 15, 2011, you will no longer be able to browse, buy or download applications for Windows Mobile 6.x phones via the Windows Marketplace for Mobile web site.

Without sideloading, this effectively instantly obsoletes a platform. At least Windows Mobile devices are safe — is yours?
