I replaced a 25yo dying forced air electric system with a heat pump about six years ago. I believe heat pump cost was about.. 30% more than a standard furnace, but electric co. rebates/govt efficiency programs/etc reduced the cost by a decent bit. Either way, my overall electric costs went down by 1/3 the next year. Compared to what it would have cost to keep the old unit functional, I'm pretty sure the heat pump has paid for itself in savings. It's also been perfectly reliable, this isn't exactly new technology.
But yeah, I don't think the cost benefit is necessarily there to replace perfectly functional A/C/furnace units with heat pumps.. but if it's to replace an old one, there is zero reason not to do it.
