Not to seem like a science denier but this is crap. If you did science...detail the purpose of the study, the methodology used, the controls, the detailed results and the peer review that duplicated or contradicted the results. And what they mean. Also reveal who commissioned the study and who put up the money. Then it's science. Until these conditions have been met it's simply advancing and agenda. So fuck off. And on the other hand...on a non scientific take...thousands of years of use and no one noticed anything wrong until Harry J. Anslinger came along to start the ball rolling. Again. Fuck Off.

Well done cement head. Here's a thought though. Maybe there would be less of the tragedies you site if there weren't so many who think like you. Because each and everyone of the perpetrators of those acts believes themselves to be morally correct. Just like you. Now off to your football match old boy. There's fun to be had. Oh and I just wouldn't be happy if I didn't ask....what's that you're typing away on?

Well I think we're an ocean apart and that's unfortunate because I'd love to give you the chance to "beat the crap out of me". I suspect that it might not go so well for you. Unless you produce a weapon like all cowards do. It's true I am a g33k, a "Loserboy nerd" but like all those with a functioning brain I realize that it's mind AND body (I list them in that order on purpose and I'm explaining that because I fear the subtly would be lost on you) . But that's a different discussion. If you had two brain cells to rub together you'd realize that it's much more effective, and lasting, to defeat an oppressive authority from the inside by reason and "reverse subversion" rather than by violence. I won't bother explaining why. You either understand that or you don't. But that would mean thinking and reasoning and planning further ahead than "what's for dinner tonight?" I know how that tires and strains minds like yours. Rant away cement head but try and understand you're only helping the "oppressors" argument and re-enforcing their resolve that the brutish and criminal downloading rabble must be contained and punished. I look forward to your next inane reply.

Tim Berners-Lee Is Sorry About the Slashes 620

Stony Stevenson writes "A light has been shone on one of the great mysteries of the internet. What is the point of the two forward slashes that sit directly in front of the 'www' in every internet website address? The answer, according to Tim Berners-Lee, who had an important role in the creation of the web, is that there isn't one. Berners-Lee revisited that design decision during a recent talk with Paul Mohr of the NY Times when Mohr asked if he would do any differently, given the chance. 'Look at all the paper and trees, he said, that could have been saved if people had not had to write or type out those slashes on paper over the years — not to mention the human labor and time spent typing those two keystrokes countless millions of times in browser address boxes.'"

Expedition To Explore an Alaska-Sized Plastic "Island" 325

Peace Corps Online writes "An expedition called Project Kaisei has departed bound for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch — a huge 'island' of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean estimated to be the size of Alaska (some estimates place it at ten times that size). The expedition will study the impact of the waste on marine life, and research methods to clean up the vast human-created mess in the Pacific. The BBC quotes Ryan Yerkey, the project's chief of operations: 'Every piece of trash that is left on a beach or ends up in our rivers or estuaries and washes out to the sea is an addition to the problem, so we need people to be the solution.' The garbage patch occupies a large and relatively stationary region of the North Pacific Ocean bound by the North Pacific Gyre, a remote area commonly referred to as the horse latitudes. The rotational pattern created by the North Pacific Gyre draws in waste material from across the North Pacific Ocean, including the coastal waters off North America and Japan. As material is captured in the currents, wind-driven surface currents gradually move floating debris toward the center, trapping it in the region. 'You are talking about quite a bit of marine debris but it's not a solid mass,' says Yerkey. 'Twenty years from now we can't be harvesting the ocean for trash. We need to get it out but we need to also have people make those changes in their lives to stop the problem from growing and hopefully reverse the course.'"
