Comment Re:Builds are going from nightly to beta? (Score 1) 49

Shouldn't only patches (which proved to be stable in the nightlys) be PORTED to beta? Moving a whole release just moves all the experimental features as well ...

Experimental features are behind feature flags which means that they get disabled with the merge to beta, here is an example from the source code: http://searchfox.org/mozilla-c...

Firefox 3.5 Now the Most Popular Browser Worldwide 422

gQuigs notes a graph up at StatCounter Global Statistics, which shows that in the last few days Firefox 3.5 became the most used browser version worldwide, edging ahead of IE7. IE8 is rising fast (along with Windows 7), but over the last few months the slope of Firefox's worldwide curve has been steeper. (In the US, IE8 has always been ahead of Firefox 3.5; in Europe Firefox has led since late summer.) The submitter suggests using the time when Firefox rules the roost, globally speaking, to put the final nail in the coffin of IE6, which still has a 14% global share (5%-7% in the US and EU; China and Korea are holding up IE6's numbers).

EU Wants Removable Batteries In iPhones 320

MojoKid writes "Current regulation, introduced with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) in July of 2006, primarily sought to prevent the unnecessary use of toxic metals in batteries as well as making it easier to recycle and dispose of used batteries. The updated 'New Batteries Directive,' as discussed in New Electronics by Gary Nevision, would go much further. Article 11 of the directive, as currently written, would require that devices must be made in such a way as to allow batteries, either for replacement or at end of life for disposal to be 'readily removed.' Of course, Apple's iPhones and iPods wouldn't meet this requirement, as it stands. It's obvious that an iPhone battery replacement program could be considered a cash cow for Apple as well."

Comment Re:Thunderbird needs better filtering (Score 1) 422

For example - our companies mail boxes are not allowed to go above 1 GB. So, in KMail, I have a rule that says to automatically move messages older than 90 days from my IMAP inbox to my local inbox. This automatically protects me from having my inbox overflow, and I still get to keep all my messages for archival.

Can I do even this simple task in Thunderbird, no.
In thunderbird menu "Tools/messages/filyters/new filter"
Filter: Age in days - greater than - 90
Action: mover to - local folder x

Since it's an IMAP account, this will be applied everytime you launch Thunderbird. You can even apply it manually by opening the message filters and clicking on "run filters".

I have been using it since Thunderbird 1.5 I think, works fine.

Actually, things in Europe are quite different from one can read from the aforementionned report. See http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/18773 .

Germany is at 24%
Finland is at 34%
Czech Republic is at 23%
Poland is at 22%
France is at 16%

These numbers are measured by independent French firm XitiMonitor, which publishes a monthly report on browser market share.
In a related note, see also http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=node/view/18802 , which demonstrates a steady monthly growth for Firefox in Europe, with a rough estimation of more than 37 millions users in the Old continent.
