Before I make myself look stupid, I actually play the english horn. I was an oboe major in college. The english horn actually got its name from an earlier version called the "Angled-Horn" because the instrument actually had a bend in it. Later the bend or "angle" was taken out. Today's english horns have a bend in the bocal (the extension between the instrument and the reeds). "Angled" eventually was called "Anglo" which we all know ended up as "English"
