Comment Charge a reasonable price. (Score 1) 438

Yes, use a contract, in case you may not have noticed its pretty much essential. Not using a contract is like having sex with an STD ridden prostitute without using protection. Clients are always trying to screw you and they often leave you with something that burns.

Also, for the rest of us, please charge a reasonable price. A professional web designer or developer should make $40/hr+ depending on your region. Its a grave disservice to your peers to charge less than this, as it it not an acceptable wage for the amount of work and skill required to design and implement a proper web presence. I suggest buying a copy of the Graphic Artists Guild's Pricing and Ethical Guidelines, it will detail going rates for design work.

RIAA Now Filing Suits Against Consumers Who Rip CDs 403

mrneutron2003 writes "With this past week's announcement by Warner to release its entire catalog to Amazon in MP3 format with no Digital Rights Management, you would think that the organization that represents them, The RIAA, would begin changing its tune. Instead, they are pressing on in their campaign against consumers by suing individuals who merely rip CDs they've purchased legally. 'The industry's lawyer in the case, Ira Schwartz, argues in a brief filed earlier this month that the MP3 files Howell made on his computer from legally bought CDs are "unauthorized copies" of copyrighted recordings.'"

How Fast is Your Turnaround Time? 418

petrus.burdigala writes "I work for a mid-sized commercial software company (~20 Mloc) and we are frequently challenged by our supervisors to get fixes around the clock. Overall, we manage to get a 'bullet-proof' patch in about 4-5 weeks (from coding->QA->Build/Packaging->shipment), which I consider not so bad. But the other day, we got an urgent request from our support team to come up with a decent fix in 48 hours. I think they're a tiny bit unrealistic. So I wanted to get feedback from my peers: are we doing that bad? It takes months for other software vendors to issue zero-day exploit fixes, are our customers being unreasonable?"

Spore About Six Months Away 90

SimCity creator and all-around genius Will Wright recently publicly stated that Spore is about six months away. Whether that's six months from completion or release isn't said. CVG has his comments from a recent interview with Radio 5 Live: "Spore's an ambitious game - which he admits - that's essentially a life sim. Players start off as a single-cell organism and then create their species at every stage of its evolution - from its first steps on land through to tribes then a culture and then finally it's off to explore the galaxy. 'We've had to do a lot of testing to make sure that the game is accessible by a wide group of people', Wright went on to explain. 'I want the people who have played The Sims to be able to play Spore - I don't want it to be some thing just hardcore gamers play.'"
