Saying that a new iPod is coming out is somewhat of a double-edged sword. It might hurt iPod sales in the present, but if that new iPod does come out, it will only help Apple and hurt Zune sales. In the long term, probably not a good strategy. Short term? Might work. Might not.

The use of such a stupid strategy also highlights the stupidity of Zune marketing: it bashes Apple instead of hyping how good its own product is. Does that say something about how (un)good the Zune is going to end up being?

Useful Apps for First-Time Windows Users? 980

pauljoyce asks: "I'm a Mac fan who is intrigued by the possibilities of Apple's Boot Camp software. Now that I have a chance to painlessly dip into the Windows world, what I'd like to ask you is, what Windows software amazes you? I want to build a list of unique, elegant, can't-do-without apps, so all us new Boot-Camp babies can finally experience some of the great innovation happening over on the Windows platform. I roughed in a quick blogpage to collect the info, and to house any useful discussions. It'll probably deteriorate into a flame war at some point, but hopefully I can get a few contributions to each category before then. Would those interested please chime in with their list of favorites?"

The Software of Space Exploration 45

David Boswell writes "The O'Reilly Network is running an article called The Software of Space Exploration that looks at a number of the software projects that NASA has released as open source under their NOSA license. It explores how they are using other free and open source projects for use in some of their missions. Information about the European Space Agency and other space organizations is also covered." From the article: "A number of tools allow you to track objects in space, from asteroids to shuttle missions. A consortium of scientists working in the field of celestial mechanics has released OrbFit as free software under the GPL. This software can compute the orbits of asteroids and predict an asteroid's future position. You can also track artificial satellites with several free-as-in-beer and free-as-in-freedom options. Amateur radio enthusiasts use Linux and these tools to hear transmissions from the space station or from other satellites in Earth orbit."

Alcatel and Lucent to Merge 174

Cappella writes "It is confirmed. Alcatel and Lucent are combining to form a USD $25 billion entity. This marks a new wave of telecommunications company consolidation in the next few months to come." They first tried to work out a merger five years ago, but finally, at long last, it's come to fruition.

Now for a moment of shameless showing off; my best time to complete the game from starting a new game to completign the last mission is just under 2 hours. Can anyone beat that? Course, I have an unfair advantage, I was QA at activision on USM for about 2 months. Played way more USM than should ever be played of one game.

And my views on the game? Overall, a good game. Not great, but good. It's a fun romp, but not something I would stick with for more than an hour or so at a time.

What I liked: A minority I may be, but I actually liked the Spider-man combat. It was a lot of fun seeing whether you could get Ultimate and working on becoming an expert on when to switch attacks. The boss fights in general are very fun, and it's a lot of fun to just blow random things up with cars. Throwing cars with Venom definitly takes some getting used to, but it's quite accurate one your used to it. If you want a challenge, try hitting helicopters with army tanks in "The Great Escape"

What I didn't like so much: Shenanigans got awfully repetitive awfully fast, especially med transport missions. Chase mission are especially annoying with Venom because one mistake can cost you the entire mission ("chase electro" in particular is bad for this) Trick races are obscenly difficult in comparison to the rest of the game. After working about 50 hours a week just playing USM, I still could only get Ultimate on about half of the trick races. And I was one of the best at them!

Final thing: The complaint about tentacle attacks being the most effective attack with Venom is only true when you aren't very good. You can get some awesome combos with Venom when you learn him better. For example, hitting tentacle, then grab, then punch will have Venom tantacle attack, grab the emeny with the tentcale, pull them close and then Venom will power punch them into the ground. Lots of fun!

Oh yes, and buy Gun when it comes out. Great game. Can't say anymore, I've got a bitch of an NDA over me.
