I can't beleive *everybody* working in all those films was completely clueless. More likely, there were loads of people jumping up and down shouting at the producers/directors "No, that doesn't make sense!" but because the producers/directors don't understand it, they assume that the general public won't either.

There's probably a gorilla enthusiast newsgroup going on at Gorillas in the Mist saying "But Gorillas don't scratch their ears with their left hands!".

All films have inconsistencies, you just have to be lenient and allow a bit of poetic licence in the region of reality.
