Scientists Propose Using Cold War Era Weapons To Deflect Asteroids (blastingnews.com) 114

MarkWhittington writes: Many people are considering what to do if an asteroid was headed for a collision with Earth. One such collision wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Now, films such as "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" depict what might happen if Earth were threatened with a similar event in modern times. As a result, some people are repurposing weapons that were built or envisioned during the Cold War to confront the celestial threat, from old ICBMs to space-based laser systems.

Comment Android audio apps (Score 1) 106

The problem for android audio is not the lack of MIDI. It is the horrendous latency problem Android devices often have. To feel responsive when being used for live performance, the delay between user input and audio output should be less than 20ms. But as you can see here http://superpowered.com/latenc... a lot of Android devices don't meet that.

There are some surgeries that leave objects they cannot reliably distinguish from bombs without removal. Now that the TSA seems to slowly begin to understand what it takes for the to actually provide security, they may discover that they cannot.

I had surgery like that this year. At first, the prospect of making all the lights flash on their machines was amusing. It isn't anymore. I think I could have taken the grin and bear it approach to an enhanced pat down (not that it justifies them), but this is too much. An enhanced pat down does at least allow you to satisfy the TSA that you are not any kind of threat in accordance with their stupid rule book. However, if they are going to add an innocent person to their watch list without giving that person a chance to prove their innocence, then their system is well and truly broken.

Having said all that, it's interesting how a situation that affects you personally makes a difference. By my argument, the TSA's system is already well and truly broken. For example, there are people who are on the watch list simply because they have generic names.

What a load of BS.

One of the reasons to use MATLAB is it's huge collection of algorithms in the toolboxes. Another reason to use it is Simulink. Details on the Mathworks website: http://www.mathworks.com/access/helpdesk/help/helpdesk.html Someone else mentioned it's 2D and 3D plotting capabilities. Python may well be nice as a number crunching environment, but for algorithm design, it is very hard to beat MATLAB.

Ubuntu Mobile Looks At Qt As GNOME Alternative 262

Derwent sends along a Computerworld piece which begins: "The Ubuntu Mobile operating system is undergoing its most radical change with a port to the ARM processor for Internet devices and netbooks, and may use Nokia's LGPL Qt development environment as an alternative to GNOME. During a presentation at this year's linux.conf.au conference, Canonical's David Mandala said Ubuntu Mobile has changed a lot over the past year... 'I worked on ARM devices for many years so a full Linux distribution on ARM is exciting,' Mandala said, adding one of the biggest challenges is reminding developers to write applications for 800 by 600 screen resolutions found in smaller devices. 'The standard [resolution] for GNOME [apps] is 800 by 600, but not all apps are. For this reason Ubuntu Mobile uses the GNOME Mobile (Hildon framework) instead of a full GNOME desktop, but since Nokia open sourced Qt under the LGPL it may consider this as an alternative.'"
