+1 for Sipdroid, I am currently spending a few months overseas and Sipdroid + sipgate.com work flawlessly for me every time. Sipgate actually gives you a phone number and unlimited incoming calls for free, and there are ways to integrate Goolge Voice to it (and they are having a promotion, you get an hour of outgoing air time free), between that and Skype, it basically covers all my long distance calls. Alternatively, check with your cellphone carrier to see if you can get a femtocell. If you are with them for a few years, they will usually waive the device and monthly fee (especially if you call retention and threaten to leave). Then you will be able to use your regular cellphone.

TSA Wants You To Keep Your Seat, and Your Hands In Sight 888

Posted by timothy from the ex-post-facto dept.
An anonymous reader excerpts from an AP story as carried by Yahoo News about changes stemming from yesterday's foiled bombing attempt of a Northwest Airlines flight: "Some airlines were telling passengers on Saturday that new government security regulations prohibit them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing. The regulations are a response to a suspected terrorism incident on Christmas Day. Air Canada said in a statement that new rules imposed by the Transportation Security Administration limit on-board activities by passengers and crew in US airspace. ... Flight attendants on some domestic flights are informing passengers of similar rules. Passengers on a flight from New York to Tampa Saturday morning were also told they must remain in their seats and couldn't have items in their laps, including laptops and pillows." The TSA's list of prohibited items doesn't seem to have changed in the last day, though.

While that may be true for those of us nerds that always want the greatest and latest, but there are also some little old ladies that have been watching the same TV for the last 30 years and don't care about HDMI or 1080p, all they care is something that they don't have to rebuy till the day they die. Another example is other appliances that you probably care more about reliability than new functions. Like my uncle, he has been this same rice cooker that's basically nothing more than a heater coil and a bowl on top of it for the last 30 years, all while my parents kept getting new models with fuzzy logic and all the other non-sense built in. I lost count how many times we had to replace ours.

Alienware Refusing Customers As Thieves 665

Posted by kdawson from the please-just-take-my-money dept.
ChrisPaget writes "Thinking about buying Alienware (now owned by Dell)? Think again. After buying an almost-new Alienware laptop on eBay, I've spent the last week trying to get hold of a Smart Bay caddy to connect a second hard drive (about $150 for $5 of bent metal). Four different Alienware teams have refused to even give me a price on this accessory, instead accusing me of stealing the machine since I didn't buy it directly from their eBay store. They want me to persuade the eBay seller I did buy it from to add me as an authorized user of his Alienware account — they have no concept of 'ownership transfer' and instead assume that if you're not in their system, you must be a thief."

NoScript Adds Subscriptions To Adblock Plus 408

Posted by Soulskill from the countermeasures-and-counter-countermeasures dept.
hahiss writes "Apparently, NoScript has taken to adding its own whitelist updates to Adblock Plus — so that the ads on the NoScript page show up — without notifying users. (It is described on the NoScript addon page, however.) This was a part of the last update to NoScript. Wladimir Palant, the main developer of Adblock Plus, describes the situation in an informative blog post." Update — 5/02 at 12:30 GMT by SS: Reader spyrochaete notes that "InformAction, makers of the NoScript extension for Firefox, have removed the recently introduced AdBlock exceptions which unblocked the revenue-producing ads on the NoScript homepage with little or no warning to the user. According to the changelog, InformAction pushed out an update specifically addressing this controversial decision 'permanently and with no questions asked.'"
