guess who is also going all in Asteroid Response? Russia. Not a mention of that in this thread. The Russians will probably far outspend the USA also. The USA is in a bad spot where Congress seems to think there is some virtue in reducing NASA's budget. The Russians intend to own this program which should create a lot of jobs.

After Learning Java Syntax, What Next? 293

Niris writes "I'm currently taking a course called Advanced Java Programming, which is using the text book Absolute Java, 4th edition, by Walter Savitch. As I work at night as a security guard in the middle of nowhere, I've had enough time to read through the entire course part of the book, finish all eleven chapter quizzes, and do all of the assignments within a month, so all that's left is a group assignment that won't be ready until late April. I'm trying to figure out what else to read that's Java related aside from the usual 'This is how to create a tree. This is recursion. This is how to implement an interface and make an anonymous object,' and wanted to see what Slashdotters have to suggest. So far I'm looking at reading Beginning Algorithms, by Simon Harris and James Ross."

How do they know meteorite velocity was 30k mph? How do they know meteorite was pee size? Is the kid holding the meteor in his hand in that picture? Why wasn't the meteorite pulverized when it hit the road? Why doesn't article have picture of the hole in the road? Anyway, 30k mph is 44k feet/sec. Lets say distance from hand to road was 4 ft (to make math easy) so dt between hitting hand and impact road is 9.09..e-5 seconds. And this kid could perceive that time difference? fishy story.

DIY Web "Television" Station? 24

randomkind asks: "Media production can be quite a bit of fun. I think it would be extremely cool to run a television station, or at least a series of television-like shows. Luckily, the web offers an alternative vehicle for publication than the standard media-mogul run cable television providers. That is why I'm looking in to creating a website that would, in essence, be a completely free television station online, with pre-recording (and sometimes live) streaming video feeds and a regular programming schedule. Think of it either as the visual analog of an internet radio station, or a very glorified webcam. My question is: Where to start? What kind of digital recording equipment is suggested? What kind of editing and effects software is needed? What kind of content delivery method is suggested (ie Real, or some other streaming video plugin)? Any special hardware requirements? Is there anything else that I ought to know about creating and running something of this sort?"
