" Is a masters in computer engineering better than two years of experience at a company?"

No, but you should get a masters degree anyway since it'll make it much easier to get your first job and it's actually "proof" of knowledge much more so than work experience. That said, you'll probably learn a whole lot more during your first two years working than the entire time studying.

Comment For continuos integration servers! (Score 2, Interesting) 118

I am seriously considering to hook up one of these USB Missile Launchers to our continuos integration server at work. When someone checks in code that doesn't compile or breaks tests the launcher targets the offending developer (using pre-determined login aiming mapping) and fires a couple of rounds at him. That'll certainly increase code quality!

I think this is about to change, if it hasn't already. At my two recent jobs (software engineering/programming) it was fine to use Linux. Perhaps not encouraged, but perfectly fine if you could manage it. At my new job I'll get a MacBook Pro (with OS X obviously) when I start there.

Unix

Journal Journal: Unix professional in a Windows World

I feel kinda isolated here. Everytwhere around me people are using Windows, and to speak the truth so am I, eventhough I'm protected by a layer of Cygwin. Everyone seems to understand that Unix is something really really great and powerful and they seem impressed and awed by my skill at it. We might be migrating one important server sooner or later. We're already only using open source servers like apache and mysql. It's me and one other guy that are unix fans. Or, actually, we're both Apple

Windoze Longhorn is trying to look like OS X but it's not even close and I don't think it'll ever be.

Music

Journal Journal: Longing for Roskilde

I'm starting to get the longing for Roskilde Festival again. Strange. One week of permanent heavy drinking, sleeping uncomfortably in tents and lostening to deafening music can be really addictive. Seems to be a good year with bands such as Metallica, Iron Maiden and Coldplay.
