Comment Line manager (Score 1) 344

My line manager in a previous job, hated when I used double spaces in my correspondence! I was taught to use double spaces by my mum, who used to be a professional typist, but I eventually broke the habit, and I only use one space after a full stop now. I think an option for one or two spaces (as metadata in the document) may have been nicer; that way, it could just tell you if there are inconsistencies. It's stylistic, and not really a mistake. One space is a sensible default, but telling the user that two spaces is a mistake, is a little strange. In any case, at least there is an option to ignore it. I do think it's a shame that writing style is being homogenised. If you read old books, assuming they haven't been edited out by the publisher, the author will sometimes have some strange use of punctuation, that isn't necessarily wrong, but would probably be flagged by modern word processors as being 'mistakes'.

It's worrying. Admins may install this, without thinking about the consequences to productivity. I don't think it's the right approach to security. Stop userspace applications accessing sensitive parts of the system, sure, but stopping them from even running at all? Something like this would be fine on, say, a cash machine, or a machine that needs very high security, but on a system used by lots of users, it could just end up being hassle, and the limitations to productivity could outweight the security gains. Sure, it's up to the admin, but you can't always trust admins to make sane decisions. I don't think this is the right security model. It's a over-paranoid hack, and it will be abused by lazy admins.

I never really thought such a contagious virus could be contained. I just assumed the stuff about containing it in the news, was bullshit, maybe to keep idiots calm, or something. I think most of the virus' damage will be caused by needless panic, rather than the virus itself. The best protection for a highly contagious virus like this? Keep healthy. Eat good food. Try and catch the virus when you're in fine fettle, and not in combination with any other viruses. Why play the waiting game? What if it turns into something worse? Countries will want to contain it to try and relieve the pressure from health services, mainly. Large companies are making a big deal out of it, probably to try and avoid any negative publicity. I doubt much of it is about saving lives. I just want to catch it, get it over and done with it, and be protected from the next strain.

This is all very well, but if a user really cares about privacy, then they are still better off using a custom ROM. In response to this, manufacturers would just harvest private data at a lower level, that's less user visible. For this to really work, you would need governments to vet everything that goes into a ROM. Yeah, like that will ever happen! I'm not against Google taking a stand, but I really can't see it having any effect, and it could make things worse by giving users a false sense of privacy. Even if there was tighter regulation, I *still* wouldn't trust companies not to be harvesting my data. If a user really wanted to have any chance of privacy, they'd use a custom ROM, and they would be familiar with all processes installed and running, and be reasonably confident that these are trustworthy applications that they've installed themselves. The best comparison I can think of, is my Linux VM that I've built from scratch using a very minimal distribution (Arch). Almost everything on there, I've manually set up--which makes it a bit easier, if I ever saw anything appear that I hadn't installed. And if I wanted to be really paranoid I can even check what's changed every time I do a system update.
