Nethack rocks - I keep getting drawn back to it every 6 months or so.. I always play the Valkyrie. Nethack must be the only game where you can go into eXplore mode (where you are meant to be indestructible) and yet still run into something that eats you alive.
I can't remember what it was that got me, but the monster ended up digesting me (yes, the messages came up on the screen!) and then I couldn't do anything because I didn't have a body. It was pretty classic. I love the twisted humour in the game. :)
