I've only taken one ride, while on vacation in San Francisco, and went about 8 miles. I felt safer in the Waymo than *many* taxi/Uber/Lyft drivers I've ridden with. Screens are in the vehicle and you can see everything it is "seeing". There was a bicycle that darted in front of the car, which the Waymo saw before I did and slowed down properly. It was a nice day, so there were no weather factors. I wouldn't hesitate to ride in one again.

"...about eight miles per hour -- barely faster than a brisk walk" -- I would challenge anyone to walk 8 miles in one hour. That is most definitely running at about 7:30/mile pace. Admittedly slow by automotive standards, but not the best analogy to start.

I ditched Intuit many years ago, both Quicken and TurboTax. I've been using Moneydance ever since (no affiliation). It's not quite as polished, but it does the job well for me. It's not free (the best things rarely are), but it still has one-time license purchases available, or a subscription if you're that type of person.

The only way that I can set the clock in my 2004 Acura TSX is to disconnect the battery, and then reconnect it at exactly 1:00 PM. Thankfully, the GPS still works properly. Still love the car, though! Manual transmissions are a dying breed.

I jettisoned Quicken and TurboTax several years ago after they started forcing upgrades to keep up with my investments. I moved to MoneyDance (no affiliation), and it doesn't do everything as well, but it's faster and more than sufficient for my needs. It's not OSS, but you never have to upgrade (yet!).

This does not surprise me. I have two systems on which the update process was broken on Windows 7. With auto-updates set for automatic mode, updates would not install. If you manually force the system to check for updates, it gets stuck in an endless loop showing a moving progress indicator. If the process is broken and there's no notification, then all of these systems are vulnerable.

A much more modern version of this is NASA's SOFIA aircraft. It observes in infrared with a large telescope. I worked on SOFIA, but had never heard of this! Incredible... even though the results were meh, that ride must have been amazing. I hope the visual portholes were good!

My previous phone was a Droid Razr Maxx, and I really wanted similar battery life. I ended up getting the HTC One M8 (*not* the M9, which I still believe is inferior). The battery under normal / light use lasts 2 days. Though I'm not happy with the way HTC the company has headed, I'm still happy with my phone 4 months later!
