Facebook Patents Location Social Networking 120

bizwriter writes "Facebook just received a patent with broad claims that would seem to cover much of what Google (GOOG) Latitude, Foursquare, Gowalla, and others try to do in letting users share their locations with others. Patent number 7,809,805, called 'Systems and methods for automatically locating web-based social network members,' covers people manually entering a status, sending that and their location from a wireless device, and sharing both the status and location with others. Facebook's corporate value just took a big jump — and a number of other companies might have to either challenge the patent's validity or consider licensing deals."

Should ISPs Cut Off Bot-infected Users? 486

richi writes "There's no doubt that botnets are a major threat to the safety and stability of the internet — not to mention the cleanliness of your inbox. After years of failure to act, could we finally be seeing ISPs waking up to their responsibilities? While ISPs can't prevent users getting infected with bots, they are in a superb position to detect the signs of infection. Contractually, the ISP would be reasonably justified in cutting off a user from the internet, as bot infection would be contrary to the terms of the ISP's acceptable-use policy."

Interesting... Does this mean that jump starting research on better detection of radiation from black holes is a good idea? Seems like this is a big deal to me... A black hole, no matter how "cold" or "young" it is presents a unique opportunity to observe some of the more exotic phenomena in our ever expanding universe. Never heard of Hawking radiation... Assuming it's something to do with Stephen Hawking?

Hey, thanks for the prompt reply. Very well thought out response. Do we know what caused the black hole to form in the first place? I was under the impression that a black hole was created from the death of a star. So, does that mean that a star died somewhere in our galaxy to cause the black hole to form? What are the potential implications of this discovery? Is there a chance that we could send probes to observe this thing (however we observe black holes) or what? I know that I heard something about a satellite that could gather information about gravity phenomena. Perhaps sending one of those suckers toward the black hole could yield some interesting results? Dunno, just thoughts. Thanks again for the great reply. Chrelad
