Well, for example, if you ran a command like

$ info coreutils dd

you would not see the Texinfo manual for dd. While the documentation viewer (ie. /usr/bin/info) may have been installed, the actual documentation (eg. /usr/share/info/coreutils.info.gz) was not.

The rationale given (again, IIRC) by Arch Linux for the exclusion of the Texinfo manuals was that the manuals added too much bloat. My problem with this was that the Texinfo manual of a package is often the canonical (or more complete, or up-to-date, take your pick) documentation, at least for many GNU packages.

The last time I tried Arch Linux was around 2004 or 2005; I was just wondering if things have changed since then.

Feed Augmented reality relationship game plays with your emotions (engadget.com)

Filed under: Gaming

If you couldn't quite make it to the last Wii marriage counseling session, there's still good news coming from Georgia Tech. Thanks to a group of engineering minds at the university, a new augmented reality game (dubbed AR Facade) is placing you in the center of a marital spat with nearly limitless options. The program apparently runs on a back-worn laptop and utilizes an oh-so-tacky head mountable display, and developers suggest that being placed in the midst of an "interactive drama" allows you to choose sides, attempt to mediate, and basically "define your own way to win" as you try to talk some sense into the flustered couple. Interestingly, there's even talk of bringing such games "onto mobile phones" and into the workplace, but it looks like they've got a bit of hardware trimming to do first.

Journal Journal: Romney on Abortion 8

It's really bizarre to me that people are saying Romney is a flip-flopper on abortion, that he was firmly "pro-choice" as the governor of Massachusetts.

Feed Having Accurate Broadband Data... Will Slow Down Broadband Growth? (techdirt.com)

Many broadband providers have resisted providing detailed broadband penetration data, since it would suggest that things aren't as rosy as the FCC insists with its bizarre counting system that everyone knows doesn't paint an accurate portrait of broadband in the US. However, with Congress looking to force the collection of more accurate broadband availability data, some broadband providers are protesting. Apparently, the American Cable Association is claiming that providing such information would harm broadband growth. Why? Because collecting that info would take time and effort away from providing more broadband. Of course, that suggests that these providers don't already know where they provide broadband, which is hard to believe. It also ignores that one of the suggestions for getting better broadband data is to provide a user-generated mapping tool that won't require the broadband providers' involvement at all.

Microsoft Launches Linux Labs Website 275

mjdroner writes "ZDNet is reporting that Microsoft is launching a website to 'share the activities of its internal Linux laboratories.' Microsoft says its goal is to foster communication with those who use open-source. The article also mentions that Microsoft runs a 300-server Linux installation to test open-source products." From the article: "Customers will be able to submit requests to Microsoft employees. For example, a person could ask how to best test the use of Linux desktops working with Microsoft's directory software. In addition, Port 25 will do video interviews with Microsoft employees with experience in the open-source or Unix world, Hilf said."
