What you are describing as a "MAP" sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor is actually a Mass Air Flow sensor. These two sensors are always confused and could not be any more different. MAP sensors simply measure ambient barometric pressure, by the way of the engine vaccum. And mass air flow sensors pass a current through a wire that is hung in the air stream going into the intake, and measure the time it takes to heat the wire to a certain pont, thus judging the volume of air passing by.
