Oh man, I love that game, and you're right, its so simple and fun that its addictive (besides, who can resist the trippy-ness of that whole game, especially the intro). My only complaint is that the controls were a bit annoying and buggy, but its something you get accustomed to.
Personally, I love a little variety when it comes to gaming. With that in mind, I believe there should be simple games for light gaming an d for non-gamers and complex games for us die-hard gamers.
And as fun as the old games were and still are, its a period we cannot return to. Those games were original for their time, but if released now, they would be frowned upon. Game designers need to come up with gimmicks or else they won't sell their games. That doesn't mean simple, light games can't be invented but it needs to contribute something original to the mix or else it will probably flop.
