Journal ces's Journal: Q: Best song intro? 18

What do you think the best song intro (or intros) are?

My picks:
"Baba O'Riley" -- The Who Who's Next, I just love the synth on this.

"Time" -- Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon, actually I'm not a huge fan of the song as a whole, but this intro gives me the chills every time I hear it.

Symphony No. 5 in C Minor (Op. 67) -- Ludwig van Beethoven, only the most well known 4 notes in music.

Q: Best song intro?

  • Cheap Trick Ain't that a shame Live at Budokan
  • While technically a song the Ides of March is really an intro to Wrathchild.
    • the intro for the prisoner is cool - and the one for aces high - they aren't musical but they are sweet.

the interlude on rhime of the ancient mariner is also very cool - not an intro but a killer interlude.

maiden is just a fantastic band.

it is easy to forget they were the Allman Brothers to the Lynyrd Skynyrd of Judas Priest.

Murray and Smith were doing amazing things.
  • all start with vocal samples:

chemlab - blunt force trauma "i hate a man like you so much that i'm gonna get your head down in the mud and trample it."
meat beat manifesto - original control (version 2) "think we'll every find any real intelligent life out there?" "who cares?"
meat beat manifesto - edge of no control (single version) "what is your one purpose in life?" "to explode, of course!"
  • The Camera Eye by Rush (on Moving Pictures). I love the way it slowly builds up into an increasingly complex interplay between synth, drums, bass and guitar.

The Journey by Boston. Technically it's not so much an intro as it is a transition between Don't Look Back and It's Easy, but I love it anyway.

Renegade and Queen of Spades by Styx (both on Pieces of Eight).

Eyes of a Stranger by Queensrÿche (on Operation: Mindcrime).

One by Metallica (on ...And Justice For All). It always amuses me a bit

  • Blue Monday - New Order
Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode
    Take On Me - A-Ha
    Damn near every Kraftwerk song

Some of them also make excellent ringtones. For non synth ones I'll go with Faith - George Michael, or Eurythmics' - There must be an Angel
    • I really like the intro to Personal Jesus (Pump Mix) from Remixes 81-04 and the bridge flirt with Tainted Love is completely cute.

Personal Jesus is forever tainted since the first time I saw people line dancing to it at a country bar.
        • Depeche Mode in a country bar ... hmmm ... country music must have change since last I checked.

Not really it's just that Johnny Cash did a cover of Personal Jesus a couple of years back.

See here and here [amazon.com], first link includes a link to a sample.

yeah but I think through some quirk of pop culture that personal jesus was picked up by line dancers before Johnny did the cover. His release was in 2002 and I'm pretty sure I haven't been to a country bar since the late 90s.
            • Thanks, I didn't know that.
  • Classical: Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor"
Rock: Quiet Riot's "Metal Health" (Metal Health)
                Rush's "Camera Obscura" (Moving Pictures)
Van Halen's "Explosion" leading into "You Really Got Me"
Steve Miller Band's "Electro Lux Imbroglio"

the first two parts of the song were released as a single so i think most folks are familiar with the overture and the temples of syrinx

    anyway it's awesome
  • Best intro ever? The first 40 seconds or so of Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones.
  • Since I can't seem to make up my mind (in no particular order):
    • Kraftwerk, Tour de France, Étape 2 (from Tour de France); I also have a Whitney-vs-Kraftwerk mash that I have managed to pick up somewhere which has a pretty cool intro: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) and I think the Kraftwerk track is Nummern
    • Erik B & Rakim, Paid in Full (from Paid in Full)
    • Fleetwood Mac, The Chain (from Rumours)
    • Elvis Costello & the Brodsky Quartet, Still I Almost Had a Weakness (from The Juliet Letters)
    • G

If God had not given us sticky tape, it would have been necessary to invent it.
