Journal ces's Journal: Name That Tune! 11

So I'm working along in the office today and someone put on Baba O'Riley and I knew what song it was within 3 notes or so. It kind of reminded me of the old '70s game show Name That Tune.

The question of the day is: What songs do you tend to recognize almost instantly and why?

Name That Tune!

  • I've got a weird ear; I can play name that tune in one note. Specifically, I can recognize a song by the tone of the first sound. Sometimes I'll recognize a specific bass drum sound, or often on live tracks I recognize the sound of the audience noise. I can hear one note or chord of a song and tell you if it's from the original recording session or not, yet I can't tell if a bad note is sharp or flat, only that it's wrong.

For all of you that like naming that tune, go check out Richard Cheese. I can't even

          • I like that you love that I like Supergrass! I love that you like Supergrass. Hope I'm not being too forward... :)

Whatzer favorite Smamamama? (Weird backwards stuttering thing going on)

I really love Supergrass (the CD) (what went wrong in your heeee-eh-eh-eh-eahd), but Life on Other Planets is so mahvelous! Fuck, I can't pick. :(

It is a damn shame that barely anyone knows them.
    • Brian Eno described playing a game where he'd drop the needle on an album for a fraction of a second and ask someone to guess the tune. It was surprisingly easy. Eno's explanation was that engineering was as much a part of pop music as writing and playing.

With pop music, unless you're talking about guessing the tune from someone's ringtone, it's not the sequence of notes yr going by, it's the timbre.

  • I guess this really doesn't have anything to do with Name That Tune, but you mentioned Baba O'Riley. :-) The Who is my favorite group of all time!! Roger Daltrey is teh awesome!!

Ok, anyway...I can recognize a lot of songs easily. If they would come out with a modern version of Name That Tune, I would sign up right now!!

    • I like the Who but I'm not sure I'd call them my favorite group of all time. While I can appriciate many of the groups my parents used to listen to nowdays I have a hard time numbering any of them among my all time favorites.

Actually I'm not sure I have an all time favorite musical group or artist. The closest would probably be Dead Can Dance and/or Lisa Gurrard(sp?). No matter what mood I'm in I usually don't mind stuff along those lines.

I have very eclectic tastes and will listen to almost any type of m
  • I like 80's stuff, and a good number of tunes that I can pick out from even background noise come from that time frame. If I had to isolate one tune, though, I'd have to say it would be Message in a Bottle by the Police. I have always loved that song.

  • I immediately recognize, even from hearing the very first note, the stirring and glorious Ethelred Unraed Imperial Anthem.

Those spreading rumors that the Ethelred Unraed Imperial Anthem is astoundingly similar to a cheesy song by Christopher Cross will be severely punished.

    Cheers,

    Ethelred
