One Night Stands May Be Genetic 240

An anonymous reader writes "So, he or she has cheated on you for the umpteenth time and their only excuse is: 'I just can't help it.' According to researchers at Binghamton University, they may be right. The propensity for infidelity could very well be in their DNA. In a first of its kind study, a team of investigators led by Justin Garcia, a SUNY Doctoral Diversity Fellow in the laboratory of evolutionary anthropology and health at Binghamton University, State University of New York, has taken a broad look at sexual behavior, matching choices with genes and has come up with a new theory on what makes humans 'tick' when it comes to sexual activity. The biggest culprit seems to be the dopamine receptor D4 polymorphism, or DRD4 gene. Already linked to sensation-seeking behavior such as alcohol use and gambling, DRD4 is known to influence the brain's chemistry and subsequently, an individual's behavior."

I don't understand why Christians resort to such histrionics to combat science on science's terms.

Want a retort to evolution? Here's one: God created it. He created earth, made it look 4+ billion years old, added fossils, plate tectonics, bosons, whatever you want. Why does this discussion always require God to start the game at the beginning? He started in the middle. He's all powerful.

Now, this "answer" doesn't advance our understanding of the world any. But maybe it will give us some peace and quiet.

Remember, these are the same companies that will probably never find a cure for anything because there is no money in a cure. If they can research how to cure your cancer for a one time charge, or keep you alive for an extra 10-20 years on expensive treatments which do you think they will pick?

I disagree. If Big Bad Parmacorp A bilks people with a non-cure treatment spread over 20 years, then Big Bad Pharmacorp B is incented to trump that "treatment" with a cure. Competition should take care of this.

PHP Gets Namespace Separators, With a Twist 523

jeevesbond writes "PHP is finally getting support for namespaces. However, after a couple hours of conversation, the developers picked '\' as the separator, instead of the more popular '::'. Fredrik Holmström points out some problems with this approach. The criteria for selection were ease of typing and parsing, how hard it was to make a typo, IDE compatibility, and the number of characters."
Programming

Becoming a Famous Programmer 347

An anonymous reader writes "GrokCode analyzes more than 200 famous programmers to determine what types of projects made them famous. Inventing a programming language, game, or OS ranked among the top projects likely to lead to fame. Most programmers became famous through their work on only one project. The article also shows that among famous programmers, the ratio of males to females is much larger than among normal programmers."

Parent's got it right. In terms of subscriber numbers:

In 2005, US market was about 200M phones, so 1% is 2M phones. AT&T (then Cingular) had 61M subscribers. Thus, 2/61 = 3.3% of AT&T subscribers.

Also, roughly 1/3 of all mobile phones in the US are replaced each year, so 20M AT&T subscribers would be expected to upgrade this year, even in the absence of the iPhone as enticement. So 10% of this more motivated group would also net the desired 1%.

As parent mentioned, this doesn't account for carrier hoppers.
