Is Your Printer Ripping You Off? 362

An anonymous reader writes "Are original inkjet cartridges really worth the high cost? Do third party refill inks do as good a job? This article looks at printers from Epson, HP, Canon and Lexmark, with a combination of original inks and the top selling third-party options, using a whole host of different papers. A panel of printer users judged the output in a blind test — the printer manufacturers may not be happy with the results!"

I don't hate Perl and I'm competent with it, but if I wanted to deal with that level of bookkeeping, I'd probably just write C and be done with it.

Whoa there, dude. Hinting at a comparison of Perl's references to C's pointers is like comparing untying your shoelace to untying the Gordian knot. In fact, comparing something so simple (with a sometimes annoying syntax) with something so confusing that many programmers never master it is so ridiculous that I know that couldn't possibly be what you meant. So what did you mean?

Comment Its Software Programmer! (Score 1, Insightful) 807

I am so sick of hearing about software 'engineers'. An engineer is a graduate of an engineering school. Their degree will sound something like mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, or chemical engineer. A graduate of the computer science department is not an engineer, they are a programmer. Now we have the whole software part being completely stripped away from the faux title to simply 'engineer'. Can you possibly call anyone an engineer who has no training at all in anything close to an engine?

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? 370

theodp writes to mention a C|Net article about Chinese President Hu Jintao's historic first visit to the U.S.. The catch is that his first dinner won't be at the White House. It will be at Bill Gates' manse. From the article: "The approximately 100-person guest list is a who's who of the U.S. Pacific Northwest power elite, including Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz and Washington state Gov. Christine Gregoire, said event organizers. The guests will undergo strict security checks before entering Gates' lodge-style, 66,000-square-foot home overlooking Lake Washington with a reported seven bedrooms, six kitchens, 24 bathrooms, a domed library, a reception hall and an artificial estuary stocked with salmon and trout. Gates and Gregoire are expected to introduce and welcome Hu, who will then offer a toast in front of the gathering."

Journal Journal: ID Theft Police Report

A number of folks in the slashdot crowd called me a liar about my catching the ID thieves. Admittedly, the story was pretty fantastic and many were not aware of who I am, so I can't say I'm surprised. Well, I've been a bit of a slug about it, but I finally received the police report (3.4 Megs). That file contains 10 pngs. The first 8 are the
