This is an idea that minimalist composer Steve Reich experemented with in the 60's. Two of the pieces he did were with samples (um, I mean tape loops): It's Gonna Rain features street preacher Brother Walter in San Francisco, and Come Out features Daniel Hamm of the Harlem Six. He decided it was boring just to listen to a couple tapes playing, so he wrote some similar music for live musicians including Piano Phase and Violin Phase.
