The three buildings that make up the library total about 1500 feet in length. That time 15000 comes to about 4261 miles. A nice number of miles to be away from your birthplace...

One thing I did with my kids was to get a cash register roll of paper and a measuring tape and make a scale model of the solar system.
This could be done in the gym on a cloudy day. You could also put on the asteroid belt and the diameter of some of the largest stars.
Include the extremes of Pluto's orbit.
Gives a fair idea of the distances involved.
As for viewing, are there any nice comets visible?
