my linux machine (gnome desktop + serving samba shares for a predominantly windows network) currently hasn't been rebooted since the clean install of 8.10 and related patching, which puts it at something like 6 months (not at home, don't feel like SSHing in just to check uptime)

but my XPpro/ubuntu9.04/fBSD6.4 laptop with the pitifully poor battery life gets rebooted whenever i need to take it somewhere or switch environments.

sigh. i'll get around to getting another battery someday, i swear.

What's really going to suck is when all those ads start showing up in other sections of craigslist, cluttering it even futher. They actually made the problem worse. Whack-a-mole, yes, but in this case, after you whacked the mole, it just splattered all over the place and it's even more of a mess than it was before. At least with the "Erotic Services" section, the problem was condensed and confined to one single section, at least for the most part.

that is the very reason the "erotic services" section was put in place in the beginning. users were tired of seeing the adverts when all they were after was some "normal" (non-paid-for) encounters with "normal" (define as you see fit) people.

now it's just going to go back to the way it was. woo! score one for the average craigslist user!

having watched the original story as broadcast on the news this morning when there was absolutely no mention of the video game, this is just another example of trying to shift the blame.. and revise the story after the fact..

this morning on the news, it was described how the kid waited for and missed the school bus..

then (since apparently mom was too busy sleeping to escort her 6 y/o kid to the bus stop in the first place) he decided to take the car on his own..

then somebody in the meantime must have started hounding the kid about "why'd you do this" and he mentioned that he plays a driving video game..

clearly the parents are to blame, mine, for instance would never think it was ok to take my car..
but then, i'd never leave them so unsupervised that they could in the first place..

Journal Journal: New dollar coin error scam: edge print can't be upside down 7

There are several different errors circulating with the new dollar coins, however the claims that on some of the coins the text on the edge was accidentally printed upside-down are bogus:

Due to the minting process used on the circulating and "uncirculated" quality coins, the edge-incused inscription positions will vary with each coin.

Adobe Releases Cross-Operating System Runtime 297

An anonymous reader writes to mention that Adobe released the first public version of their new cross-operating system runtime today nicknamed 'Apollo'. "The software relies on HTML, JavaScript, Flash, and Adobe Flex. The alpha version, which presently works on Windows and Macintosh, can be downloaded for free at http://www.adobe.com/go/apollo. Once the Apollo apps are created, users can launch them from their desktops, without using their browser or connecting online. An Apollo application can connect automatically to online data or services when an Internet connection is detected, with new components automatically downloaded and integrated. The user needs the Apollo runtime to run the apps, just as a Flash player is needed to run Flash animations."
