Re:Dead reckoning (Score 1)

Once as a test of our navigation skills a friend and I flew a Cessna ~150 miles with the compass and a chart. Without altering course we flew over the south half of our target runway, so we were within 1,000 feet. We figured that when we got close to our ETA we would have to circle a couple times to pick up the airport so it was a little surprising to be that close. $50,000 worth of navigation gear and all we needed a compass and a watch. Of course had the winds aloft forecast been wrong the GPS is a nice backup.
