The Unsung Heroes of PC Gaming History 325

An anonymous reader writes "The history of PC gaming is littered with many well-known and highly regarded titles, but what about the titles you mightn't have heard of? This list of the top games in the history of the PC includes the usual suspects, such as Half-Life and Doom, but also some often overlooked PC games including such classics as Elite, the space trading RPG developed in 1984 by two college friends from Cambridge for the Acorn and BB Micro systems. The game used a truly elegant programming hack to create over 200 different worlds to explore while using 32kb of memory, all with 3D wireframes. Also in the list is Robot War, which required players to actually code the participants, and one of the first online multiplayer RPGs, Neverwinter Nights, which introduced many of the developer and user behaviors, such as custom guilds, that have made modern RPGs so popular." What's your favorite classic game that always gets overlooked in these kinds of lists? My vote goes for Star Control 2.

Submission + - New species of worms release 'bombs' (yahoo.com)

caffiend666 writes: "A newly found deep ocean worm 'can cast off green glowing body parts, a move scientists think may be a defensive effort to confuse attackers. Researchers have dubbed the newly discovered critters "green bombers."' ... 'The first of the new species has been given the scientific name Swima bombiviridis.' So, it's a naturally occuring animal that rips off it's arms and throws them and we're not talking about a game from ID Sofware?"

I think it has, I know that I at least rely more on spellcheck than I should. Especially with the autocorrect, at least when it just does a squiggly line I have to look at the correct spelling from a list of possibles. When it just automatically fixes my teh's to the's, there is no reason for me to change the way I type. What would scare me is to turn off spellcheck for a day. I wonder if I would even be able to respond to emails from my co-workers. And the children, they are even worse off, they are growing up with this kind of correction, giving them no incentive to learn to spell.

Sadly, I don't think you will get the kind of exposure you want if you go this route. There may be some professors that start using this since they already know you, but it's a paradox. If something is free, it's not worth as much as something that costs $50. Most of your professors and colleges will opt for the $50 book simply because it must contain better information than a free download.
