Comment TFA is about terminology (Score 1) 463

TFA makes a fair point that some authors will talk about "chemicals" as having specific toxic effects on certain species, without specifying which chemicals they are talking about. She is not arguing against environmentalists, though. Clearly when people complain about chemicals in the environment, they are talking about man-made toxins that need to be regulated better, not about dihidrogen monoxide or whatever other smartass examples people want to come up with. The fact still stands that there are A LOT of toxins in our environment, and that number is growing at an alarming rate.

Submission + - Microsoft Courier Pictures (tekgoblin.com)

tekgoblin writes: Source — Engadget

The Microsoft Courier is supposed to be a device that will allow you to write in it like a notebook or a book. According to Gizmodo, the device will ship with dual 7-inch screens on each side. It appears that the functionality of the Courier is much like a blog or an online journal. The Courier seems to have Bing Maps integrated into it as well. The pictures of the drawings on the screen are stunning to say the least, but will it hold up when it is released in the fall (rumor)?

Submission + - Adobe Download Manager Installing Without Consent

adeelarshad82 writes: Not all is worth cheering about as Adobe turns 20. Researcher Aviv Raff has found a problem in ADM (Adobe Download Manager) and the method through which it is delivered from adobe.com. The net effect of the problem is that a user can be tricked into downloading and installing software using ADM without actual consent. Tonight Adobe acknowledged the report and said they were working on the issue with Raff and NOS Microsystems, the company that wrote ADM.

Stanford Teaching MBAs How To Fight Open Source 430

mjasay writes "As if the proprietary software world needed any help, two business professors from Harvard and Stanford have combined to publish 'Divide and Conquer: Competing with Free Technology Under Network Effects,' a research paper dedicated to helping business executives fight the onslaught of open source software. The professors advise 'the commercial vendor ... to bring its product to market first, to judiciously improve its product features, to keep its product "closed" so the open source product cannot tap into the network already built by the commercial product, and to segment the market so it can take advantage of a divide-and-conquer strategy.' The professors also suggest that 'embrace and extend' is a great model for when the open source product gets to market first. Glad to see that $48,921 that Stanford MBAs pay being put to good use. Having said that, such research is perhaps a great, market-driven indication that open source is having a serious effect on proprietary technology vendors."
