I am not a professional artist, I haven't ever had the money to spend on a photoshop license, so instead I have been clumsily using gimp for many years. I totally buy it when my designer friends tell me they can't consider Gimp a viable replacement for Photoshop, but it has been getting better over the years. I sure do like the idea of them getting the support they need to make gimp a more competitive alternative to photoshop.

You act like this is an option for everyone. "have insurance and save for a rainy day"?! Many people live paycheck to paycheck. Even if they don't, it's not always just one rainy day they encounter; maybe the saying, "When it rains, it pours." stuck around because life often seems to go that way?

Overall I get the sense that we agree on the big picture, but why not have a little more faith in others? For starters, it's really not an option to be an entirely self sustainable individual in the world. Unless you're capable of providing your own health care, concocting medicines, growing food, building and maintaining infrastructure, designing, running, and maintaining electrical systems, cutting and drawing lumber... Few people probably have the knowledge to do all these things, and nobody has the time to. The point is that society is necessary. Instead of writing everyone off as untrustworthy, why not seek out and form a strong network of friends? Good friends are also reliable parts of a social safety net.

In my state, your ID must have your current address on it. A wealthy person can easily afford to maintain a permanent address, but people without land of significant resources end up having to move for all kinds of reasons. The mosquito* is a device designed to repel most people under 25 years of age using a 17.4 KHz tone. It seems reasonable to me therefore that 18 KHz would be audible to people too, but it probably doesn't matter here; the tone is probably pretty low amplitude. This means it'll be both quiet and at the very threshold of what most people can even perceive. Useless? Don't be such grump! What changed!? Ed Snowden. Apple complied in the past when information security wasn't such a hot button issue. Now times have changed. Now people are paying attention, and they take their privacy seriously. Apple has been reassuring its customers that their iPhones are secure for years now. Their message had been consistent that they will keep their customers' personal iPhone data private. Apple is loyal to its customers, the American people. If the people weren't so wary of government spying, nobody would think twice about Apple helping them in an investigation. The government made it's bed, now it's gotta sleep in it.
