My iPad 1 is also close to useless for browsing. I'll think again before buying Apple again. As soon as a new generation arrives your 'old' device can be thrown in the trashcan :/
It isn't easy being the parent of a six-year-old. However, it's a pretty small price to pay for having somebody around the house who understands computers.
