Microsoft Blesses LGPL, Joins Apache Foundation 425

Penguinisto writes "According to a somewhat jaw-dropping story in The Register, it appears that Microsoft has performed a trifecta of geek-scaring feats: They have joined the Apache Software Foundation as a Platinum member(at $100K USD a year), submitted LGPL-licensed patches for ADOdb, and have pledged to expand their Open Specifications Promise by adding to the list more than 100 protocols for interoperability between its Windows Server and the Windows client. While I sincerely doubt they'll release Vista under a GPL license anytime soon, this is certainly an unexpected series of moves on their part, and could possibly lead to more OSS (as opposed to 'Shared Source') interactivity between what is arguably Linux' greatest adversary and the Open Source community." (We mentioned the announced support for the Apache Foundation earlier today, as well.)

ASUS Integrates VOIP and PSTN Into Motherboards 101

yahyamf writes "ASUS recently announced that their TeleSky telecom adapter will now be included in two of their motherboards. The TeleSky converts an ordinary house phone into a multi-functional Skype phone. With one jack connected to the house phone and the other to the ground telephone line, the TeleSky can switch the house phone connection between the PSTN and VoIP networks. While it sounds interesting, how would this compare to the dedicated VOIP adapters available from SIPURA and others?"

4 Seconds Loading Time Is Maximum For Websurfers 219

nieske writes "Of course we all want webpages to load as fast as possible, but now research has finally shown it: four seconds loading time is the maximum threshold for websurfers. Akamai and JupiterResearch have conducted a study among 1,000 online shoppers and have found, among other results, that one third of respondents have, at one point, left a shopping website because of the overall 'poor experience.' 75% of them do not intend ever to come back to this website again. Online shopper loyalty also increases as loading time of webpages decreases. Will this study finally show developers of shopping websites the importance of the performance of their websites?"

Comment No Konami? (Score 1) 588

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Konami games on the NES? (uu--dd-lr-lr start!)

If I just want to kill some time, I'll just fire up Contra or my favorite, Life Force.

But, man, the NES had so many good games. Castlevania, Zelda, Metroid, the list goes on and on.

Or, if you want to go even older than the NES, how about some Intellivision games?
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Astrosmash, Triple Action, Pinball or Sea Battle.
Man, I wish I never let my parents sell that console.

I wish I was lucky enough to have a Galaga machine.
I'd get on it and never ever get off. I love Galaga.
