I always carry-on my laptop/portables/videogame consoles/etc when I am flying. I have heard too many anecdotes about checked electronics straight up getting stolen during an "inspection" of checked baggage and there is basically 0 you can do about it. No idea if this is still a problem, but I don't feel like risking it just to avoid the hassle of having to pull out multiple items into separate bins to get scanned individually.

The guy that runs it doesn't seem to be in it for the money. It looks more like he's trying to run a no-frills bookmarking service with a sustainable business model. He regularly, openly, and humorously criticizes other sites that get bought or go "tits up" and blow away all user data (via the @pinboard twitter). The service used to have a one time fee, and the one-time fee would increase slightly for each user. He has since switched to $11 yearly because users were getting too confused about the one-time fee increasing.

The Zebra Surari is hands down the best pen I've ever owned. Girlfriend (who writes a lot more than I do) agrees, and has refilled hers twice (I always lose pens before I have to refil). darkwing_bmf sends word of Turbine's announcement that Lord of the Rings Online will become a free-to-play game this fall. 'The move is another validation of the free-to-play business model, where gamers can play for free and pay real money for virtual goods such as better weapons or decorative gear for their game characters. The business model has been popular in Asia but only recently took off in the US. This move shows the pressure is building on game publishers to shift to the new business model or face declining audiences.' According to a post on the official website, LotRO's micro-transaction system will be "very similar" to how Turbine's DDO store works, and current subscribers will maintain all of their privileges.

metasonix writes "While the rest of the industry has been babbling on about the iPad and imitations thereof, Qi Hardware is actually shipping a product that is completely open source and copyleft. Linux News reviews the Ben NanoNote (product page), a handheld computer apparently containing no proprietary technology. It uses a 366 MHz MIPS processor, 32MB RAM, 2 GB flash, a 320x240-pixel color display, and a Qwerty keyboard. No network is built in, though it is said to accept SD-card Wi-Fi or USB Ethernet adapters. Included is a very simple Linux OS based on the OpenWrt distro installed in Linksys routers, with Busybox GUI. It's apparently intended primarily for hardware and software hackers, not as a general-audience handheld. The price is right, though: $99."
