Gates deserves almost no credit, in fact I'd argue he cost the world billions in hard-to-maintain crapware and set back the computing industry by 10 maybe 15 years.
At the time there was an amazing, thriving computer ecosystem. Lots of innovation, interesting hardware, really cool UI design. Windows won out not by being better - it wasn't - but through blatantly illegal actions. See https://www.justice.gov/atr/us....
