buffer-overflowed's Journal: Contest Update, Blah, and Some stuff on Video Games

The eastern europe trip looks like it's going to be a go for next Summer. I'm still working up the rules for the contest. I don't know when they'll be finished. I've registered the account Slashdot-Games. If you want to participate, friend it with your alternate account(don't friend this one unless you want to boost my fan list for some reason or like me enough to friend me twice). If you want to take over it, email me and I'll do a little verification then hand over the password. I'm delaying because I expect it to take up a good deal of free time and I'd like to work out a few conscious issues(mainly due to Pudge and Cliff). :)

Right now I'm sitting here with a bottle of Knob Creek(The gift set was mislabeled[I assume, since I bought it for a friend a week ago for $20.00] at $10.00 when I went to Rite Aid for cigarettes and beer after work[Shaker, Marichino Cherries and a bottle of 9 year old bourbon... SCORE!]) a Warsteiner(Dark) and a glass of water. Adult Swim(presently Reign) is on in the background. I went into work at noon, got off at 9:45. My job rules, it just doesn't pay a lot :-). I'm plotting out how to fit a mini-itx board and a bunch of trimmings into an old NES. I'm also trying to figure out whether or not I want to mod the NES case(well beyond what I have to to fit the mobo and other stuff in), and how.

I have yet to order the trimmings. I will need a Laptop HDD (4200 RPM at least 40 GB) and a Slimline/Laptop DVD drive. If anyone has any of that and is willing to sell it on the cheap, let me know. I'd also like to know of a decent Gamecube-like or Dualshock-like USB controller that would be appropriate for MAME/Emulation. I can't seem to find one(I haven't been looking too hard yet, just a quick and simple google search). Saige or any of you other MAME gamers know of one?

Oh and I need a backplate(and only a backplate) prefitted for a VIA Nehemiah M1000 Motherboard. I'd prefer not to have to make one. My dremel is still tired from making a reflux still!

Anyway, you all know what an NES looks like, right?

I'm tempted to paint it a different, more modern color scheme/luster and then restencil the lettering on(same location) and restencil the P1/P2 lettering above the original controllers in a smaller font as LP1 and LP2(The L stands for legacy). I'm also tempted to make the HDD Activity light light up an inlaid, tinted Lexan, chrome trimmed "Know your roots"(like the T-Shirt) on the top. I can't seem to think of how to make this fit, but I want it, badly.

My reasoning behind modifying the look is that the best place ergonomically speaking that I can think of to mount the included(but needing to be modified) Firewire/USB bracket is on the front between the power/reset buttons and the original controler jacks. This will be metal(It's got a PCI backplate like most secondary USB plug into mainboard doohickeys), and it just looks in my mind like it'll make the whole thing look like a VW Bug with a Rocket engine slapped onto the back. Or like a civic with a Type-R sticker and an Airplane wing as a spoiler.

Oh and when I do it, I'm going to post pictures of the whole process here.
