what? how is music.apple.com a fake link?
visiting music.apple.com in firefox https://i.imgur.com/JT4C7W9.pn...
I'm listening to music on Spotify right now, just using my (open source) web browser. No "proprietary software" needed.
proprietary javascript and DRM decrypting browser extensions are still proprietary software
Apple Music (streaming service) has DRM. Music *purchased* through the iTunes music store is DRM free (not sure if apple is still selling it).
yeah, i'm very happy with my (non-5G) pixel 4a
quite disappointed that the 6 line is full of bigger phones only
itunes 2 wasn't that bad (at least on osx, don't remember what it was like on os9), but yeah, needing a mac to get music onto an mp3 player was quite a barrier of entry
when they first added windows support it was a pain (musicmatch jukebox was not the best)
as for codecs, mp3 was fine for the time, i know my entire music library was mp3 at that point
actually using an ipod was pretty nice though, scrolling through a library with a wheel instead of buttons, having more than a couple lines of screen real estate, it makes sense that it was popular
but keep in mind it didn't really take off until gen 3, at which point itunes for windows existed

i remember having firefox 3.x nicely customized with extensions i liked and trying out the alphas/betas for firefox 4, but using chrome more and more because it was fast
then chrome hit what felt like extension parity and i switched over completely
i'm sure i'm not alone in that experience
firefox didn't get fast fast enough
chrome sync made chrome an easy default for new machines
but now that i don't use a google account chrome is much less inviting
so for the past year or so i've been using firefox on debian and firefox on android and i've been very happy with them (ublock origin works with mobile firefox)
