As far as I remember, I started to use CD (and stopped floppies) in '98, when I had to move from France to Japan. I made a full hard disk backup at that time, fearing the computer would not survive the 1 month travel. I never touched a floppy since then. I switched to DVD when I moved for the second time from France to Japan, in 2005 (but could not even make a full backup - just personal data).
Blu-ray is next step, when I am sure to find a Linux-compatible writer.
