Comment Climate change? Try explaining vaccines (Score 1) 637

If you've ever talked to a parent who is opposed to vaccination because of a perceived risk demonstrated through anecdotal evidence, while ignoring the much graver and statistically real risks of the disease the vaccine prevents, you know that we're not that hot at evaluating just about any risk that requires math to fully understand it. Even if the risk to their own child is greater without the vaccine, too many relatively educated parents make the wrong call. If the risk is primarily to more vulnerable populations, or to their grandchildren, because of the greater incidence of the disease in the future... you can pretty much forget it.

Carbon and Rosetta were obviously transitional technologies - they were specifically invented to help you *not* drop things right away. WebObjects is still in use in-house at Apple - it powers iTunes Connect - you know, that little site where the Swift developers get paid? True, they gave up on it for third party developers, but only because nobody liked it. Objective C will go away if Swift covers the same territory completely and developers like it better. If not, it won't.

It might not be worth it to you, or even to me, for a test pilot to die for space tourism. But taking that risk was worth it to the test pilot, for the chance to fly in space. People take bigger risks for lesser (but still personally satisfying) rewards all the time. I'm sorry it bothers you, but it's not up to you. That's the definition of private activity.
