We don't use trouble tickets here. Our VPs are well enough aware that I am busy, as are the other 3 IT staffers trying to keep everybody moving forward. Most issues are resolved on a FIFO basis and each staffer has their own AO. Barring ISP issues most problems get taken care of the same day. Good infrastructure+ good co-workers+ VP support= Happy and Efficient IT people

Do you really want to work for someone that doesn't or can't afford to play by the rules. You can get around it with OSS, but in the end is that the kind of business that is going to move and grow? If you educate them and they still won't/can't go legit, I think it's a good time to walk away before you invest too much of your time.
If they are willing to depart from their pirated software and move towards OSS, then you can help them usher in a new era of IT and save them some money down the road. BTW: One of my pet peeves is the line, "But the guy before you....". I'm not him/her so deal.

What Skills Should Undergrads Have? 587

I am currently attending a small Canadian University as a 3rd year Computer Science and Business student set to graduate next year. What seems to have troubled me from reading the article and user comments is that I do not feel as confident as I want to be in C, ASM and other related low-level programming topics. I was taught C++ in my introductory courses, with subsequent classes using C# or Java. My education has not been particularly difficult or time consuming to get good grades, so I have spent my free time dabbling in topics and languages that interest me (ie Multiple GUI Toolkits, Python, Linux). How can I spend my free time in the next year to prepare to enter the work place with a proper toolbox of skills? From what I have been told, there are more jobs for Java and Data Warehouse development teams compared to lower-level programmers. As an undergrad, what skills should I be trying to attain now to further my employability in the future?"

The institute will start conducting test runs in Sapporo at the end of November to check the streetcar's capacity. Powered by the onboard battery, the vehicle runs at a maximum speed of 40 kph for 15 kilometers and is capable of converting 70 percent of its deceleration energy into electricity, which it sends back to the battery."
