Comment Lotus 1-2-3 (Score 1) 91
This was interesting to read, I was just clearing out old product release boxes from my Lotus days from my attic. Yes back then, you bought a box, and inside came owners manuals and lots of 3.5" diskettes.
What a shame things became there, brilliant engineering minds (Ray Ozzie etc.) wasted by lazy and unfocused product managers, silos of folks who didn't talk to other teams, a total inability to execute, and no internal accountability. I think golf course jobs were more disciplined. Folks showed up whenever (if at all). It became impossible to meet deadlines, they became meaningless. Then products were shipped regardless of quality because they finally had to ship something.
Microsoft was extremely focused back then (mid 90's) and their mission was clear - wipe Lotus off the table, and that they did. 1-2-3 for DOS was a stable product, the windows port of 1-2-3 was a disaster, full of bugs and crashes. Then wild stories of the OS crashing or slowing Lotus products by design! And then in 2005 - the final gut punch was hearing Ray Ozzie was hired by Microsoft.
